Burn, baby, burn
At 11:49 am EST, a member of the White House press corp informed the President that Yasser Arafat is dead. No confirmation yet. First step to Pali/Israeli peace?
Update: Only a couple sources maintain that Arafat is dead; most say that he's brain-dead. If his condition is improving, why didn't they just say so?

First step to Pali/Israeli peace?I don't see it that way. In fact, I would think it may bring about more violence as they all attempt to take over his spot.
How do you see it as helping peace?
There would be no peace as long as Arafat and Israel both existed; the former would not tolerate the latter. There might well be some messiness on the Palestinian side in his wake, but I'm less concerned about that; there is potential that a replacement will consolidate Palestinian security, and quit playing one against the other to prevent peace. It's only 'potential', but that's more than we had with Arafat.
