I've been looking for a phrase to describe The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy while avoilding the words 'disappointingly' and 'uninspired', or making reference to the ego it was clearly intended to indulge instead of rendering the story. I think I've got it:

You had some of the most brilliant material ever written to work with, you jackasses.
